About Us
Ave Maria College is an inclusive Catholic girls’ secondary school located in Aberfeldie, Melbourne, that fosters academic achievement and self-confidence. Founded in 1963, the College was established by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary with the vision to provide high-quality Catholic education to the young women of Essendon and beyond.
60 years on, our unwavering dedication to women’s education continues as we empower our students by providing the foundation of belonging and instilling curiosity to explore, courage to excel, confidence to thrive, compassion to love, and community within which they may grow.
Our slightly smaller cohort sizes and compact campus mean that we get to know our students, not just in the classroom but through the myriad of co-curricular and leadership activities available to them. Not only do we aim to foster the creative, spiritual, academic, physical, and social abilities and talents of our students but we also champion student voice to ensure every student is provided the opportunity to thrive.

Student Development & Wellbeing
At Ave Maria College, we are committed to providing the best foundations for students to engage and thrive. Our Positive Behaviour Framework, which incorporates Visible Wellbeing and Restorative Practices, is designed to meet the needs of the College community, taking an education focus that is age-appropriate and rooted in current research. We acknowledge the importance of wellbeing to learning success and empower students to tackle challenges both in and out of the classroom through the use of positive psychology techniques.
The College has designed a social and emotional learning program for each year level that allows for a range of experiences for our students, including Wellbeing Days and fortnightly Mentor Period sessions that allow us to address specific growth areas. We liaise with a range of providers to ensure that our students have access to leaders in their fields.
At the heart of our approach to Student Wellbeing is knowing our students and being able to provide the individual support each student requires. We work in partnership with parents to ensure that each student is known and given the skills to navigate the challenges of teenage life and beyond.
Learning Opportunities
We are dedicated to providing innovative and contemporary learning environments that spark curiosity and allow students to thrive in our ever-changing world. Inspired by Helene de Chappotin’s ‘learning is for fullness of life for all,’ learning and teaching at the College is a holistic and inclusive experience that provides opportunities for each student to grow and thrive.
Working closely with families and students to address specific interests, needs, and capabilities, we have developed bespoke learning programs and diversified our pathway options to ensure every child has a pathway that maximises engagement and will set them up for success upon graduation.
The College also offers a wide range of Co-Curricular opportunities for students across a variety of learning domains. Aiming to foster the creative, spiritual, academic, physical, and social abilities and talents of our students, our programs offer authentic experiences to complement their growth and development.
Ultimately, we strive to educate the whole person, fostering a lifelong love of learning and readiness to contribute to the world.

The facilities are intended to spark curiosity and encourage students to seek new knowledge and skills with the view of opening pathways to emerging professions through classroom transparency, collaboration, and engagement.
Institutional Excellence
At Ave Maria College, we are as rich in tradition as we are future focused. In 2023, the College celebrated 60 years of providing high quality Catholic education to the young women of Essendon. While much has changed since our early beginnings, we are immensely proud of all that has been achieved and the women that our students become.
The College prides itself on providing a supportive community in which our students continue to feel they belong to long after they graduate. Our growing Alumnae network, known as Ave Belong, allows us to share and celebrate the stories of our Alumnae to encourage our current students to pursue their goals and dreams. Through Careers panels, guest speakers and mentoring opportunities, we regularly welcome back our Alumnae to continue to contribute to our vibrant Community.
