Hear from Melbourne Girls Grammar

About Us

Melbourne Girls Grammar is a place where challenge and choice create opportunities for every student to discover who she is meant to be.

A leader in girls’ education since 1893, our School has built an outstanding reputation for excellence, enabling students to develop with confidence and independence. World-class learning programs, state-of-the-art facilities and an extensive co-curricular program inspire each student to achieve their best in the classroom and beyond.

Challenge and choice are key elements to our progressive educational outlook. We are and always have been an innovative, forward-thinking school. Melbourne Girls Grammar graduates leave the School with the knowledge, skills and experience they need to navigate whatever life throws their way.

Melbourne Girls Grammar encourages and supports students to look outside their own community and provides authentic opportunities to engage with emerging technologies, arming the next generation with skills for the future. This enables Grammarians to interact with companies and industry sectors solving real-world problems, attend internships, attain micro-credentials and meet with visiting entrepreneurs to share experiences.

Students at Melbourne Girls Grammar are bold, courageous and dynamic, ready to meet the future head on. They define their own path through the choices they make and the opportunities they embrace.

Message from the Principal - Dr Toni Meath

To educate is to make an intervention into the lives of others. When we intervene, we do so with certain assumptions about the value of what we are doing and why. Building students' capacity for future readiness is a moral-ethical learning endeavour and one that cannot be left to chance.

To achieve this, Melbourne Girls Grammar promotes a progressive, contemporary community of practice committed to providing personalised high quality curriculum, wellbeing and co-curricular programs that enable lifelong learning for every student. We are future focused and committed to inspiring our Grammarians and equipping them with the values, knowledge and skills to be ready to make their mark on the world.

Academic Excellence

Tradition meets innovation. A curated curriculum and extensive co-curricular opportunities await girls at Melbourne Girls Grammar.

We teach girls how to self-manage and be independent learners within positive and supportive environments, developing the resilience, persistence and confidence to achieve their best in any pathway they choose — for themselves and for the greater good of the community.

Students leave Melbourne Girls Grammar with a distinctive education and an aptitude for pursuing their passions. They are independent, adaptable, ethical in their decision making, and highly-effective team players.

Melbourne Girls Grammar is a leader in girls’ education. We take the education of girls very seriously, ensuring our Grammarians are active participants in their learning.

We offer a completely customised learning program to give our students an edge while encouraging individual passions. Our innovative learning approach strives to facilitate an education based on sharing knowledge, skills and experience.

Our School has demonstrated 130 years of excellence in girls’ education. As a community, we are so very proud of every Grammarian for the hard work and determination they have shown throughout their VCE studies.

Student Development & Wellbeing

Wellbeing is central to the Melbourne Girls Grammar experience as we believe an exceptional education for life not only develops academic skills and attributes, but emotional and physical wellbeing as well.

With an established wellbeing team for every year level, we focus on the holistic importance of the social, emotional, physical and academic wellbeing of our girls. We understand that when our girls feel well and in control of the many aspects of their lives, they confront obstacles and challenges with confidence and a belief in their capacity to solve problems.

Research indicates that young people thrive when living and learning in an environment that optimises both choice and challenge. Our integrated wellbeing model responds to this and provides the conditions that best support positive mental health and overall wellbeing.

Our overarching objective is to empower our girls to understand what underpins good health, such that they set and pursue goals to ensure their wellbeing is a priority. Our girls will learn to take responsibility for their wellbeing by developing understanding and skills for life.

The Melbourne Girls Grammar Wellbeing team brings together a group of five remarkable professionals from diverse backgrounds, including counselling, elite sport, psychology and education.

Weekly, one-on-one wellbeing coaching is a vital component of the Senior Years Program. During these sessions, girls are empowered to identify their values, and to learn how to effectively balance all aspects of their spirituality, health, learning and relationships.

Learning Opportunities

Our girls are encouraged to embrace all activities as an opportunity to expand their experiences, further develop existing skills and find new passions. Involvement in all aspects of school life increases each student’s sense of belonging, expands friendship groups and leads to higher levels of motivation and engagement.

At Melbourne Girls Grammar, we believe a physically active culture is the cornerstone to positive wellbeing. A person’s attitude to sport and physical activity is often shaped by their experiences as a child or adolescent. Our programs are founded on creating fun and positive learning experiences in skill acquisition and physical literacy. Our team of experienced and passionate coaches are committed to creating welcoming and inclusive spaces, a mindset of endeavour, goal setting and personal achievement, and a culture that values healthy habits and physical activity to support broader wellbeing and performance outcomes for life.

Music is a vibrant and exciting aspect of co-curricular life at Melbourne Girls Grammar. Our students perform in a wide range of ensembles across age, year and instrument levels. The music department offers private tuition in a range of instruments as well as lessons in voice and music theory.  All students who learn an instrument are encouraged to join an ensemble to support their musical development and general wellbeing.

The visual arts are an integral part of the Melbourne Girls Grammar curriculum from ELC to Year 12. Additional opportunities for art students include participation in the Annual Melbourne Girls Grammar ELC – Year 12 Art Exhibition, Art, Design and Photography Exhibitions held in the MGGS Gallery and off site both locally and internationally. The Program is enhanced by many opportunities for the students, including an extensive Artist in Residence Program with a range of practising visual artists and visits to galleries and artist studios.

The drama program at Melbourne Girls Grammar consists of classroom drama and the co-curricular drama program. The Drama and Contemporary Movement program is enhance by our proximity to the cultural heart of Melbourne and our students see a diverse range of theatrical performances at various venues.

We work to ensure that we effectively make use of the best tools to support student learning. This involves careful assessment of emerging technologies and their integration into the learning process. We ensure that every Grammarian is placed to excel as a learner and achieve success using a wide array of learning technologies.

To achieve these goals, Melbourne Girls Grammar makes ongoing investments in digital infrastructure to provide for a highly effective learning environment supported by existing and emerging learning technologies. Our learning technologies integration ensures that every Grammarian has support and is extended in their learning journey.

Institutional Excellence

In 2020 Melbourne Girls Grammar launched to the School community a vision for a future that sees the empowerment of young women to take action, to embrace challenge and to have the ability to harness the ever changing landscape of their future.

The School’s Strategic Plan 2020-25 clearly articulates the importance of the environment – it is our third teacher, a stimulus for much learning, and provides a sense of place and history. Perched high on Anderson Street hill, Merton Hall has been a focal point for generations of day and boarding students. The iconic red brick walls hold many memories – the stories of past traditions vital to our sense of identity. But as with many sites around this great city of ours, the environment has shifted and changed to address the challenges of progress. So too our campuses.

The Melbourne Girls Grammar Institute (MGGI) is a global educational community hub, dedicated to innovation and leadership in education practices.

Attending Melbourne Girls Grammar is the beginning of a lifelong connection to the School and its community.

With over 13,000 members our Old Grammarians Society (OGS) is a fundamental part of our MGGS Community. The OGS was founded in 1904 and today, our Old Grammarians or OGs as they are more fondly known, can be found in all corners of the world. Our large network of Old Grammarians represents an expansive and impressive range of experience, backgrounds and professional pursuits and we value the contribution and connection of every member.

With the hope of remaining connected to all of our students once they venture beyond our red brick walls, every past student of MGGS is welcomed back as a life member of the OGS.
