Hear from Xavier College
About Us
At Xavier, it is our intent to commit ourselves with passion and purpose. This is centred in our exceptional development of our students.
Our passion is fuelled by our understanding that the experiences and opportunities we provide serve to thoughtfully challenge and nourish each person and unlock their unique gifts and potential. We deliver an incredibly broad range of learning experiences that are inspiring.
Since 1878 at Xavier, and founded upon 500 years of Jesuit learning and faith communities around the globe, we have been developing our students in their intellectual, spiritual, moral, physical, social and emotional capacity. Xavier offers a nurturing space, valuing inclusiveness, wellbeing and teamwork, in which students strive to grow and discern, and to foster a passion for life and learning.
Our inspiring learning experiences are bedded within our distinct Jesuit values and principles, and framed in our pursuit of human excellence. In combination, these distinctive features of a Xavier education have a genuine and sustaining impact in the formation of lives of great character and depth.
We recognise that their gifts must be used not simply for the enrichment of self, but for the betterment of others. We recognise that their heart is most on fire when they are making a meaningful contribution to the world through service. In these ways, we seek to fulfil the Ignatian ideal of forming ‘men for others’ through acting in faith, for justice, and with dignity, humility and respect.
We do not expect that our students will leave Xavier with all the answers, but that they will know the questions to ask. In this way, our hope is that they have the courage to pursue the questions that really count.
Message from the Principal - William Doherty
Life is at its most brilliant while learning. For nearly five hundred years Jesuit schools, through the academic challenges they provide, have produced figures of note across almost every area of human endeavour.
Xavier has been part of that rich tradition since 1878.
Our Alumni speak of finding lasting values that go to their happiness, wellbeing and fulfilment in life after school. Across all vocations, we find Xaverians maintaining life-long friendships, and seeking to build stronger communities and a more just society. We invite you to be part of the next generation of exceptional graduates.
Academic Excellence
A Jesuit education encourages independent thinking, reflection, and discernment.
As a Jesuit school, Xavier educates through the head, the heart and the hands. While an academic credential is important, we offer an education for life.
It is our hope that our students will always strive to be the best version of themselves, and that they will use their gifts and talents in the service of others and to make a difference in our world."
Our VCE students have once again achieved some remarkable results, a number of them placing high in the state's rankings.
Student Development & Wellbeing
The concept of pastoral care is central to all that we do.
It is emotional, social and spiritual support provided to our students in all aspects of their school lives that ensures that they feel ‘walked with’ and listened to throughout their journey, whether it be in the Boarding House, on the sporting field, in the classroom or passing in the hallway.
The intent of the Wellbeing teams across our campuses is to work collaboratively to offer specialised assistance to protect and safeguard the mental health and wellbeing of all in our care: staff, students and their families in a safe, supportive and respectful environment.
Our aim is to foster a commitment to develop the whole person: 'Cura Personalis', the care of the individual.
Key principles of student wellbeing are linked into many aspects of school life at Xavier College. At a more formal level, students participate in the Ignatian Formation Framework which aims to provide students with skills to build the following: Individualised care cultivating wellbeing; and, Resilience and self-efficacy.
The five main elements of the Ignatian Formation Framework consider student development with regards to self-awareness, gratitude, relationships and community, enriching experience and service for and with others.
Furthermore, students are also developing key wellbeing principles when they participate in College Expeditions, sports programs and Centre for faith and Service programs.
Learning Opportunities
Our ASPIRE graduate framework underpins our efforts in teaching and learning at Xavier.
We strive to develop aspiring, spiritual, positive, inspiring, resilient and empathetic young men who will provide outstanding service and leadership in our world. In the Jesuit tradition, the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP) encourages students to adopt a lifelong love of learning and a focus on understanding, experience and reflection in their studies, involvement in social justice programs, performance on the stage and participation on the sporting field.
Our commitment to the IPP leads to all of our teaching staff completing professional learning so they can embed the key stages of the IPP (context, experience, reflection, action and evaluation) into their subject planning and classroom practice.
At Xavier College, our curriculum is guided by the development of the whole person, a commitment to social justice and a global way of thinking, engaging and understanding. A Jesuit education encourages independent thinking, reflection, and discernment.
Learning Environment
At Xavier College, we are passionate about maintaining and developing teaching, learning and living environments that fully support educational outcomes, nurture our spiritual journey and inspire us to be the best version of ourselves.
Our buildings are comprised of both stunningly restored historical spaces and state of the art, architectural designed learning spaces that help us to achieve our learning goals. Xavier College continues to undergo an unprecedented transformation of our campuses and built form environments. This continues to be an exciting period in our proud history.
Institutional Excellence
In 2028, we will celebrate 150 years of Jesuit education at Xavier College. This is an incredible milestone that speaks to many generations and countless lives developed and connected through their experience at Xavier.
As we look ahead towards our 150-year milestone and the many decades to come, we are entirely centred on an aspiration of developing not simply the fullest capacity of our College, but more so, the fullest capacity of each and every young person walking through our gates.
Xavier College aims to promote connectivity, collaboration, partnerships and alignment within and beyond the College community and to emphasise the quality of relationships throughout the College community, underpinned by respect, listening, thinking, reflection, discernment and conversation.
The Old Xaverians’ Association (OXA) exists to promote the welfare and advancement of Xavier College through the activities of the past students. It seeks to remain engaged with as many past students as possible through reunions, events and ongoing communication.
We have a commitment to caring for our natural environment and aspire to encourage our students and staff to adopt sustainable practices in their everyday lives. Our students are invested in their commitment to the environment.
